The Lake Oconee community is named for the Oconee River, named after its original inhabitants, the Oconee Indian tribe. This river and the Appalachee River, both featuring clean-running and constant currents, come together to form this environmentally sound lake. The Georgia Power Company maintains a consistent water level all along Lake Oconee’s 375 miles of shoreline, with the exception of designated annual occasions for homeowners with lakefront properties to repair docks and maintain breakers. This makes for ideal conditions for water sports from fishing to water skiing through all 12 months of the year.

Since Oconee is a property owner’s lake, other rules and conditions are maintained to protect the value and integrity of the area. Boat traffic and the subsequent noise and water pollution are kept to a minimum, while still allowing public access. Additionally, the power company sustains environmental protection rules that completely surround the lake. This and other efforts allow for the area’s natural abundance of wildlife and native fauna thrive and grow.

The weather is appealing as well, with an annual average of 62 degrees. This area of the south enjoys a “best of both worlds” climate wherein they still get four distinct seasons, but not as extreme as in northern states, so road conditions are consistently good and it only gets cold enough to enjoy your fireplace in the evening.
